Why do we suffer? Can it be avoided, or is life just really hard sometimes? How do we take control of things that are seemingly impossible to control, but have massive, sometimes lethal consequences in our lives?

In this episode, I share my experience of being diagnosed with a rare and incurable disease that forced me to confront some of those questions head-on. To help me navigate some of these questions, I asked my good friend and repeat guest Richard Goerling to join me for the discussion.

Richard is a retired police lieutenant, veteran, researcher, and training innovator in resiliency, humanity, and human performance. He founded Mindful Badge, a consulting firm that trains mindfulness and resilience skills across the U.S. and Canada. Richard is an affiliate professor and researcher within the Mindful Performance & Resilience Lab at the Graduate School of Psychology at Pacific University. He is trained and certified to teach mindfulness through the Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behavior at the University of California Los Angeles. Richard also holds an adjunct faculty appointment at the Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University, where he teaches an annual course on leadership ethics. He has participated in research projects with Pacific University, West Virginia University, Brown University, Oregon Health Science University, and others.
